Kimberly S. Quayle, MD ’88, HS ’94

Kimberly S. Quayle, MD ’88, HS ’94, professor of pediatrics, the Dana Brown Chair of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, and chief of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, is honored as a leader in pediatric emergency medicine, a respectful but incisive administrator, a dedicated medical educator and a distinguished scientist.

Quayle’s success in a complex branch of pediatric medicine has required the breadth and depth of knowledge to apply cutting-edge emergency care with humanity and warmth in moments of life and death. She also has a gift for providing care for diverse populations, ranging from infants with serious medical conditions to victims of gunshot wounds.

Despite her extensive clinical and administrative responsibilities, Quayle has a productive scholarly career. She was a site principal investigator in the PECARN Head Trauma Study, which collected and analyzed data on 40,000 children and elucidated an Imaging Rule for minor head injury, greatly reducing the number of CT scans children now receive. Quayle was also first author on an article about the epidemiology of pediatric head injury in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2014. She serves as site principal investigator for PECARN, a national collaborative of pediatric emergency medicine research.

Quayle’s authoritative and entertaining lectures and supportive bedside teaching twice earned her the Pediatric Clinical Educator Award from Washington University’s emergency medicine residents.

Nationally, Quayle serves on the Data and Safety Monitoring Board for one of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute studies and on the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Chief’s Subcommittee, American Academy of Pediatrics. Her communication style has also made her highly sought-after for university and hospital committees, where her willingness to work hard, study issues thoroughly and analyze them carefully is greatly prized.

Quayle earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1984 and a medical degree from Washington University in 1988. A residency, chief residency and fellowship at St. Louis Children’s Hospital followed. In 1994, she joined the Washington University faculty. She is a former Medical Staff President, and currently the Chair of the Credentials Subcommittee and Medical Director of the Emergency Department at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

The Washington University Medical Center Alumni Association is pleased to present its Faculty Achievement Award to Dr. Quayle.
